Wooden Light Bulb

LEDON  2009

This lamp is created to achieve a mixture of modern design and traditional craft technique. The traditional Japanese ‘Rokuro’ technique is utilized to make wooden light bulbs. The bulbs are handmade by turning pine on a lathe and carving away until the bulb is between 2-3mm thick. An LED light is then placed inside the shell, with the casing all made from aluminum. The effect is certainly striking, if not particularly bright – the light given off is akin to shining a torch through your hand.
This project was awarded with the Kyoto renaissance design competition and still under development.
