Sekkei Handrail

Accessories  2022

In the beginning, the goal of this project was to renew the simple handrail already sold at Comenza.
When I began the design process, I decided to create different design iterations through 3D modelling to produce realistic form models within the constraints of manufacturing by casting metal, that gradually solidified the shape.
One element I was particularly conscious of was the balance between softness and hardness to establish a modern form.
In the end, two shapes were chosen to be manufactured.

The first Handrail features a cylindrical shape that gradually tapers from the base on the wall joined with a prismatic shape in the vertical direction.
The functional constraint encountered was that the cover must be moved to the top, so the gradually tapering cylindrical shape changes to an elliptical shape where it connects to the prism. In addition, the front and back surfaces of the prismatic part of the arm are slightly curved to give subtle softness and an organic feel to this design.

The second shape is uniquely durable and delicate at the same time. The thickness of the arm was reduced as much as possible while maintaining strength, and the edges were slightly rounded to add softness. The radius of the corner when viewed from the side was determined by balancing strength and appearance.
Many functional constraints were considered during the design of shape especially when the wall side cover is removed for installation. These considerations about function and manufacturing inform the shape of handrail.

The most important design aspect of this project was the coexistence of minimalistic material usage and originality.
Rather than using basic cylinders or prisms, I added tapers and rounded edges to the design ensuring that each handrail support used as little material as necessary. This created an aesthetic and durable new shape that combines hardness and softness to give originality to the product.
Of course, to meet the functional needs of casting manufacturing, I made fine adjustments in 0.1 mm increments to complete the design.
This has resulted in modern handrail support that is original yet simple and can adapt to any environment.
