The SUMIIRI chair features a detail called “SUMIIRI” literally translating to “corner entry”. This shape has been used and handed down in Japan since ancient times, characterised by the inward dips in the corners. The shape of the seat frame and backrest evoke a sense of traditional Japanese beauty, while the overall structure uses contemporary straight lines to harmonise with modern interiors.
The SUMIIRI chair is also available as an armchair while preserving the original shape. The arms support the elbow where the front leg extends upward and connects to the back leg. This joint is delicate yet strong giving the armchair a refined look.

In Japan, the culture of using chairs is not as deeply rooted as in the West. Many chair designs have been modelled after those in Europe and America. Chairs with original Japanese motifs will be an important piece in the future of the Japanese design and furniture industry. The SUMIIRI chair makes use of overlooked materials and meets the distinctive demands of Japanese customers, filling in the missing gap in the market for high-quality and sustainable locally made dining chairs.

The backrest and seat are made of solid wood with a soft radius, this gentle curve ensures that there are no harsh edges. The backrest, seat, and legs are attached at an optimum angle for comfort and support. The fabric is fitted to the wooden frame with moderate fill and without any gaps through skilled upholstering.

The upholstered part conforms to the shape of the person as well as the chair allowing the user to remain seated for an extended period. Metal screws are used only in the bottom part of the seat making this chair easy to maintain and reupholster.
Quality, efficiency, and longevity are the key points of consideration behind choosing the techniques to produce this product. The SUMIIRI chair also hopes to inspire cultural appreciation and sustainability through its form and manufacturing ethos.

The SUMIIRI range also includes wall-mounted mirrors that incorporate the same inward corner detail with more products underway.
