Bevel

Wooden Spoon Exhibition  2025

Bevel is a handcarved birch spoon created for the Wooden Spoon: Handcrafted Design Exhibition.
Guided by the natural texture of birchwood, the idea was to craft a spoon that feels fresh and refined yet remains humble and functional as an everyday object.

The handle is composed entirely of intersecting bevelled planes which is accented by a sharp ridge, giving the piece its name “Bevel”. This geometry transitions seamlessly from the spoon’s neck into the bowl, where soft curvature meets subtle flatness.

True to my usual process, I began with sketches, then refined the form digitally to capture the balance between structure and softness. A 3D-printed model served as a guide for hand-carving, along with cross-sectional guides allowed me to verify the contours and bring the final form closer to the envisioned shape.

When resting on the table, the Bevelspoon appears as if hovering lightly above the surface, its form conveying both calm precision and quiet strength. In use, it feels deliberate and dignified, honouring the act of holding and serving.

Why do we design?
As a way of exploring this question, we revisit the making of a spoon.Spoons are a primitive tool and embody the origins of design and craftmanship: simple, tactile, and deeply personal.

We used the Ki-Ita: Make Your Own Wooden Spoon kit, developed to let anyone discover the joy of craftsmanship through their own hands. Many creators from diverse disciplines were invited to carve “the spoon they truly wanted,” informed by the rhythms and aesthetics of their own lives and work.

In doing so, each participant discovered the intimate connection between hand, material, and thought, sparking joy for design. The exhibition celebrates these
